All I can say about the incredible Valentino show at the QUEENSLAND ART GALLERY / GALLERY OF MODERN ART in Brisbane is “go and see this spectacular show!” The colours, textures and handmade craft are lovely to behold, particularly as the creations are staged on platforms and not behind glass. A comprehensive display of magazines articles and clips, historical photographs, writings and films on Valentino’s career separates two large rooms filled with haute couture from 1959 through to 2010. The show, ‘Valentino, Retrospective: Past/Present/Future’ was originally organised as an exhibit at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris and truly showcases Valentino’s contribution to fashion . Get yourself to Brisbane!
AFTRS is proud to be the venue for the launch of the Australian Production Design Guild [APDG] and their new website. A guild in the making for a long time now, APDG fills the real need for Production Designers, Designers in Costume, Theatre, Dance, Events, Digital, and other Screen areas and their associates to have a central body as a conduit for all aspects of working in these industries. AFTRS is thrilled to have supported the Guild from its origins to its fruition.

AFTRS [Australian Film, Television and Radio School] is pleased to announce the return of the Screen Design Program. In 2010 we are inaugurating two courses: The Graduate Certificate in Production Design and The Graduate Certificate in Art Direction. Keep in touch with PRODUCTIONDESIGN.FOKE to see posts by our current students and continued new links and other exciting posts. Welcome to all our students! In 2011 we hope to start our Graduate Certificate in Costume Design. Stay tuned for updates. In the meantime, follow COSTUMEDESIGN.FOKE for upcoming posts covering Costume Design for the 2010 Graduate Diploma Productions.
The Costumer’s Manifesto is an eccentric site that includes everything you ever wanted to know about or link to regarding costume design. Look up shops in the US and online, supplies, books, information on costume designers, patterns, how to make costumes, theory and design issues, historical information, links to other sites, I could go on and on…….If what you are looking for is not on this site, there will be a link to a site where you will find it. Incredibly complete and helpful! It’s great to have a central site for all information regarding costume design. Thanks to Tara Maginnis, costume designer, professor, instructor!
Not only is Janie Bryant’s Costume work for Madmen inspirational as story telling fashion, but the character’s changes and perceptions of themselves are reflected so beautifully through their clothes. Here Betty Draper is living thorugh the daze of finding out her husband has been having yet another affair. She spends at least 24 hours in this gorgeous dress from the dinner party she hosted the previous night. She starts out looking like the perfect glamour hostess and ends up the hurt child in a clown frock. The fabric is beautiful, you can just feel it. There is much praise online for Bryant’s work. Here are just a few ports of call.

In Australia, the second series hasn’t even been screened by SBS, [series one screened early this year] let alone series 3 which just finished airing in the States. With series 2 already out on DVD and series 3 sure to follow soon, the networks in Australia truly missed out! What happened SBS? You can buy series one and two through SBS or at most shops.
